Is It Worth It?
This is a question that comes to mind whether we look at countries like Haiti or even some cities in the across the world.. It seems that they face one disaster after another. When you look at the country of Haiti, as a whole, it seems that they have made little to no progress over the past 40-50 years. We believe the answer is unequivocally yes! As we visited each school this summer, we observed and heard stories about the enormously positive impact on villages and so many families.
Jesus told his disciples "the poor will always be with you." Jesus recognized that until he returns there will always be people in need. At the same time, a core part of our Christian duty is summed up in how we respond to the poor.
"Religion that God our Father considers pure and faultless is this, to look after widows and orphans in their distress and to keep oneself from being poluted by the world." - James 1:27
We do not labor in vain but obey the commandments of God. He provides the results and increase. Be encouraged as we are, remember the generational impacts from your faithfulness, over time. Eighteen years ago, we had 70 children in school - Today we have over 2500. When we started, there was no medical clinic or dental care in our area; today we have both. In 2005 there was no stable family structure in Cassange or the surrounding villages; since then we have seen many marriages and seen children growing up in two parent homes.
Looking at the eternal picture. There are thousands of people who put their faith in Jesus Christ and will spend eternity with him. We provide a clear example of what God desires for each of them in contrast to the alternative.
